North and West Coast Wales

The Dyfi Furnace used the power from the river and waterfall beside it to turn the waterwheel which provided the power to pump the bellows for the furnace. The wood from the forest was used to make the charcoal needed in the furnace with a single mature tree providing enough charcoal to make 2 tons of iron. Luckily for the forest, it all closed down after just 50 years when they changed from using charcoal to coke (coal).
